Spotting Work-from-Home Job Scams
Warning: ByteLaunch will never reach out to you unsolicited to offer work.
In today's digital age, work-from-home job scams have become increasingly sophisticated. These scams often start with an innocent-looking text message and quickly move to encrypted messaging apps like WhatsApp, making them harder to track and report.
How These Scams Typically Work
- Initial Contact: You receive an unsolicited SMS, LinkedIn message, or see a suspicious LinkedIn job ad about an "amazing" remote job opportunity with high pay for minimal work.
- Moving Off-Platform: The scammer quickly asks you to continue the conversation on WhatsApp, Telegram, or another messaging app.
- Too-Good-To-Be-True Offers: They promise unrealistic hourly rates ($50-1000/hour) for simple tasks like data entry or online reviews.
- Upfront Payment Requests: Eventually, they ask for money for a "deposit," "training materials," "software licenses," or "processing fees."
- Cryptocurrency Involvement: Many scams involve cryptocurrency payments, either asking you to pay in crypto or promising to pay you in crypto.
Red Flags to Watch For
- Unsolicited job offers - Real employers don't randomly text people offering jobs
- Requests to move to encrypted messaging apps - Legitimate companies use professional communication channels
- Extremely high pay for simple tasks - If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is
- Upfront payment requirements - Real jobs pay you, not the other way around
- Poor grammar and spelling - Professional companies have professional communications
- Cryptocurrency payment methods - Most legitimate companies don't pay in crypto
- LinkedIn job postings or ads claiming to be from ByteLaunch - We do not use LinkedIn to post jobs
